Illustration of a Kingfish

Kingfish, a.k.a. large smokers, can be caught free lining or slow trolling large live blue runners around underwater structure. They can also be caught on large ribbon fish rigged with multiple hooks placed on a down rigger below or above the thermal cline. If you find a school of bait fish there are usually kingfish in the area feeding on them. Since bait fish like structure, kingfish can usually be found around that same structure. Depending on the water temperatures and currents, kingfish will move very close to shore in the summer, and some very big kingfish can be caught within a mile from the beach during the summer months.
