Big Red Snapper prefer a depth of 120 feet or deeper during the summer months and as the weather cool off, they can be caught within 20-40 miles of Galveston/Freeport and in state waters off the beach in the southern part of the state. Use bigger baits for bigger snapper like a 6″ to 8″ mullet, sand trout, croaker, pinfish, or cigar minnow. Also, don’t be in a hurry to get your bait to the bottom. Often times, bigger snapper will suspend above the smaller snapper that tend to hang closer to the bottom. Jigs like a Snapper Slapper also work great when targeting large snapper.
